Toddler Cough
A toddler cough is an inevitable part of childhood. Whether it’s due to allergies or a cold, toddlers spend a significantly larger portion of their childhood sick than do adults.
Is a toddler cough dangerous?
It’s less than a hundred years ago that a cough could send chills down the backs of mothers everywhere. Diseases like asthma, bacterial infections which caused pneumonia, or the croup, were meant head on with everything in the home medicine cabinet.
Today, however, children are stronger due to better diet, immunizations, and better health care. This means that diseases that succeeded in killing thousands of children due to a toddler cough have been largely eliminated.
In general, then, many toddler coughs are nothing to worry about. You can give your toddler a specially formulated cough syrup for toddlers, make them a glass of lemon-grass tea, or try a good chicken soup.
Call the doctor or get medical help if:
- A fever develops that wasn’t there previously
- Your child gasps for breath between coughing
- Your child’s hands, fingers, or face seem tinged blue
- Your child can’t seem to catch his breath
In doubt? Call your doctor, so that he determine whether the toddler cough needs further treatment.
