Reading Game: Play This Fun Game to Teach Your Child Rhyming Words

Reading Game

Here’s an easy to make reading game you can play with your child that will help them learn to identify rhyming words. It doesn’t require any special materials, except a printer.

How to play “Rhyming Time” reading game:

  1. Make a list of rhyming words. Read this post for a list of phonics word endings and lists.
  2. Go to Google search. Type in one of the rhyming words.
  3. Look for the toolbar on the top of the screen: on the left side you will see “images.” Click it – your search results will change to images. Click on the picture, and then click “copy.”

TIP: It’s much easier to use PowerPoint when creating this game. Simply open it up, erase the pre-made boxes, and paste your picture in. You can then resize the picture, or move it to a different place on the page.

  1. Print out all the pictures, and laminate or cover with clear contact paper. It’s a good idea to make a self-check sheet for your child as well: simply print out an extra copy of the paired pictures, and laminate it as a chart. That way your child can play the game independently by checking their own answers.
  2. Show your child how to place one picture on the left side of his workspace. He should place the remaining pictures in a horizontal row towards the bottom of the table. Then, show him how to point to each picture, say each word, and see if it matches with the picture they have on top.
  3. If it does match, have them put the picture next to the first one.
  4. Show them how to check their work using the self-check sheet, which can be hung up on the other end of the room.
  5. Continue until your child finishes all the pictures.

TIP: To make this reading game more difficult for your child, try using a timer. Time how long it takes your child to play the game, and then set the timer for about 1-2 minutes less.

Your child will definitely have fun and learn phonics with this easy to make reading game!
