Each of the three main series of the picture books featured at Story Time for Me is centered around one of the main characters: Fern the fox, Ben the Mouse or Dragon the flame.

Fern the Fox and Dragon the Flame picture books series are suitable for young children aged 1-4.

Ben the Mouse series is suitable for young readers aged 4-8 years old.

In some of the children’s picture books, such as Fern Goes to Hawaii and Fern Goes to India, the youngest readers are introduced to the concept of traveling to foreign lands and learn a lot of interesting things about different countries.  In Fern Goes for a Dive, Fern the Fox and her friends show the children the beauty of the under-water coral reef.

Top 10 Classic Picture Books for Children

1.The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle (Penguin, 1969).
Eric Carle’s colorful classic suitable for grades PreK–2, depicts the adorable little caterpillar eating his way through an array of various food stuffs, from fruit to junk. Along the way, young readers can learn about  days of the week, colors and counting, as well as the the life cycle of a butterfly.

2. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, (HarperCollins, 1963).
This book is recommended for grades PreK–3.

When Max is sent to bed without supper for misbehaving , he travels to the imaginary land of the Wild Things, where he meets a crowd of wild beasts and is crowned as their king. Eventually he becomes homesick, and returns to his bedroom to find a warm supper waiting for him. This great story is one of the most favorite children’s picture books of all time.

3. Love You Forever by Robert Munsch, illustrated by Sheila McGraw (Firefly).
This moving picture book is suitable for grades K–3.
The story of the relationship between a boy and his mother. The love and loyalty of the mother is eventually reciprocated and carried on by the son. A poignant cycle-of-life story.

4.The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein (HarperCollins).
Suitable for grades 2–5
A wise and poignant story of the tree that selflessly gives her all is a metaphor for an unconditional parental love.

5.Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown (HarperCollins).
A lovely bedtime tale for  grades PreK–2.
A young bunny’s nightly ritual of saying goodnight to every item in his room is soothing to young children (and their parents!) Clement Hurd’s charming illustrations range from basic black and white drawings to full color scenes.

6. Guess How Much I Love You  by Sam McBratney; illustrated by Anita Jeram (1994).

Suitable for grades peK-2.

This is the story of two Nutbrown Hares, Big Nutbrown and little Nutbrown Hare, a father and a son, who try to outdo each other. The beautiful pastel-colored illustrations highlight the affectionate tone of the story. In recent years, this story became one of the most popular picture books in the U.S. as well as in the U.K. where it was originally published.

7. Green Eggs and Ham  by Dr. Seuss,  August 12, 1960.

This highly entertaining book is perfect for beginner readers but will also be enjoyable for children in grades PreK-3.

8.Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey (Penguin).
A great read for grades PreK–2.
Sal and her mom are out to pick blueberries, they meet a  mother bear and her cub. The comical moms-swapping that follows creates a comedy of errors and an adventure tale.

9. The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats (Penguin).
A fascinating story great for grades K–4.
When Peter awakes to the first snow of the season, he sees special magic in every detail of the day.

10. Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey (Penguin). Anita Silvey, author of 100 Best Books for Children.

A wonderful picture book suitable for grades  K–3, this tale of two wild ducks who are raising their family in the Boston’s Public Garden is a classic. Beautiful illustrations make the book particularly appealing to young children.
