About the Author

Robert Munsch was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, one of nine children . Although not a scholar, he always loved to write poetry. When Munsch was attending college, he began to work at an orphanage and discovered that he loved working with children. While working in the daycare industry later on, Munsch discovered that he could keep the children calm by telling them stories. He  continued telling stories for ten years, not recognizing this as a special talent, and never bothering to write any of them down. Only after he lost his job and needed an income, did Robert start to turn his story telling into a profession. After being heard by a children’s librarian, Robert Munsch was encouraged to write down his work and show it to a publisher.

Munsch’s first attempt at writing resulted in 10 stories that were rejected by nine different publishers, but one agreed to take his story called “Mud Puddle.” Later, Munsch moved to Canada in search of work , became a Canadian citizen and began to publish his works in Canada. Eventually he became Canada’s best selling author, but had not achieved recognition in the United States until the publication of  Love You Forever.

Love You Forever Book

The book Love You Forever was originally written as a song, alledgedly dedicated to the memory of  two stillborn babies that Munsch and his wife had in the years 1979  and 1980. Since his original publisher didn’t like the book, Munsch changed publishers. In 1987, the  book sold 30,000 copies ,in 1987, over 70,000 copies and over 1,000,000 copies in 1988.  In 1994 Love You Forever was at the top of the New York Time  bestselling children’s  list with 8,000,000 copies sold.

The Message of the Story

The popularity of the book testifies to the fact that it contains a universal message that speaks to the hearts of parents as well as children all over the world. It is a message of unconditional love and acceptance. No matter how “crazy” the child drives his mother, at the end of the day she still picks him up and sings him her loving song. What makes the story particularly poignant is the role reversal at the end. When the child sings his version of the song to his elderly declining mother, we see that he internalized her message of unconditional love; which he then, in tun, passes on to his own daughter. The beauty of the book is enhanced by the poetic rhythm of the repetitions, reinforcing the message that mother’s love is constant and unchanging, always.  This timeless message is appropriate for all ages, and can be shared by parents and children of all ages. It is a tribute to the basis of human existence – the emotional stability born of realization that one is valued simply for who he is, and not for some external attributes.
