Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Activities & Book
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a bestselling children’s book written by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault, with illustrations by Lois Ehlert originally published in 1989. Capital letters then come to help them. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is known for its rhyming structure which has been compared to the jazz vocal technique known as scat singing. In 2004 a sequel, Chicka Chicka 123, was published. Chicka Chicka ABC , a simplified version for toddlers, was published in 1990 .
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Story
The 26 charming characters in this rhythmic, rhyming picture book are a alphabet letters with an attitude. “a told b, and b told c, ‘I’ll meet you at the top of the coconut tree’”–with the other 23 members of the gang following suit. Lois Ehlert’s chunky bold illustrations display a luxurious green palm standing straight and tall. But as all the letters continue their climb, the tree begins to groan and bend under the burden. First the coconuts start to fall off, then all the letters also land in a big pile at the bottom of the tree. The simplified board-book version of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom stops at this point, but the original full text format goes on to introduce the helping hands of the 26 uppercase “mamas and papas and uncles and aunts.” As all the family members rush to the rescue, the letters recover in amusingly battered fashion from their various boo-boos. Letter E has stubbed its toe, while F sports a flashy Band-Aid and P is black-eyed. As the bright tropic sun begins its descent and a shining moon appears, undefeatable A hops out of bed, daring his friends to yet another treetop race. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom’s seemingly nonsensical verse is delightful with its deceptively simple narration and the repetition of such catchy rhythmic phrases as “skit skat skoodle doot.” Lois Ehlert’s bright color scheme, complete with hot pink and dazzling orange borders, matches the lively vivacious mood of the story perfectly. Children love seeing the familiar alphabet transformed into this fun adventure.
