Anger Management for Kids: Do’s and Don’ts of Helping Children Calm Down

Anger Management for Kids

Anger management for kids is a great way of helping your child learn to calm down on their own. Here’s a list of do’s and don’ts you can use to teach children –from toddlers to teenagers – to handle their strong emotions:

Don’t belittle your child’s feelings when using anger management for kids

As parents we often feel very uncomfortable when our children are unhappy. Because of this some parents tend to play down whatever it is that bothers their child. Statements like, “You can get another one,” or “I’m sure he didn’t mean it,” may sound mild to us, but often make children even more upset.

Sometimes, parents need to accept their own feelings of angst when trying to implement techniques for anger management for kids.

Don’t try to fix the problem

It’s tempting to step in and try and fix things when you see your child struggling with frustration. But children have a strong sense of independence, and don’t always want a parent’s advice or help.

Do listen to your child without judging

We all feel reassured when someone we love takes the time to listen. Whether your child is angry or just annoyed, she’ll be more willing to listen to your suggestions when she see you’re willing to hear her out first.

Do rephrase the problem as a solution waiting to be solved

Strong feelings like anger often arise because your child feels helpless, and unable to do anything about the situation at hand. You can help your child by helping them see their problem not as a problem, but a step on the way to finding the right solution.
